Plant Care Guidelines

Adaptation:
Zones 1 through 9. To determine your zone, see the map in
Plant Climate Zone Map. Most birches are not adapted to desert areas.

Light:
Full sun. Partial shade in warm areas.

Soil:
Birches tolerate a wide variety of soil types.

Fertilizer:
Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer according to label directions.

Water:
How much: Apply enough water to wet the soil 3 to 4 feet deep. To determine the proper amount of water for your soil type, see How Much Water to Apply.

How often: Birches grow best in moist soil. Water when the soil is moist but not wet 4 inches below the surface. For more information about watering, see About Watering.

Pruning:
Birches usually bleed heavily when pruned in winter or spring, so it is best to prune at other times of the year. Prune to maintain shape.
